Best of 2020

Hey everybody! I know we’ve been back for about a month now, but welcome to the new semester and a new year for CY Radio! I’m Bri, and today I’m going to share with you some great songs that have come out this year as well as some of my favorite songs that have been in my daily playlists. So let’s start out with four that have come out this year:

1. my future - Billie Eillish

I gotta be honest with you, most of Billie Eillish’s stuff is not my jam, but I was looking on Trending on YouTube, and I could not be more glad that I clicked on this video. If there is any song that has gotten me through all of 2020, it’s this one. It has such a quiet tranquility and a nice jazz flair (you guys will soon find out I LOVE jazz), and it just speaks to my soul. If you don’t listen to any other songs from 2020, definitely give this one a listen. The music video is also so calming and has an adorable frog; how could you say no to that?!

2. Momentary Bliss - Gorillaz feat. slowthai & Slaves

Gorillaz is one of my favorite bands of all time. If the name doesn’t sound familiar, just look up their song “Feel Good Inc.” and you’ll know exactly who I’m talking about. They experiment in so many genres, and their newest venture “Song Machine” is amazing top to bottom. “Momentary Bliss” is the first episode from this season (they’re calling it a season, so maybe it’s going to be a two part album?) that was released at the very beginning of this year, and it is so much fun! It is a high energy punk rockin 'good time, so be sure to give it a listen!

3. Exist for Love - Aurora

So if any of you guys have seen Frozen II, Aurora is the lovely voice throughout the movie that goes “aaaah aaaah aaaah aaaaaaaah”. She is an incredibly talented artist from Norway who has been writing songs since she was eleven! I hadn’t listened to any of her stuff until this year, and I’ve really been missing out. She put out this beautiful song “Exist for Love” back in May, and if you were to ask me to describe it, I’d say it’s a song that sounds like a pastel pink shell on the beach at sunset. It’s so relaxing and sweet, with lovely cloudy vocals and a simple and sweet romantic message. This is a great one for when you’re winding down for the day.

4. Quiet Giantz - Chevaughn feat. Agent Sasco , Llamar ‘Riff Raff’ Brown

These past two years I’ve started listening to a reggae station on the radio and have found SO MANY amazing songs through it! This is just one of them by an artist named Chevaughn, who I’m not familiar with, but has made one heck of a bop with this song. It has such a lofty and positive vibe, so if you’re down for a happy reggae-rap mix of a song, this one’s for you!

Lemme tell ya, the world might feel like it’s ending, but the soundtrack really is fantastic! If you’re feeling a bit less keen to listen to music coming out in a year like 2020, here are some of my favorites that I’ve been listening to this year.

1. Love is the Seventh Wave - Sting

I’ve been in a major Sting phase lately, and this is the song that got me started. It’s possibly one of the most optimistic and uplifting songs I’ve ever heard, so definitely give this one a listen!

2. Cumulus - Imogen Heap

This is a sweeping, relaxing instrumental that is absolutely perfect for a late-night unwind! With its orchestral electronic waves throughout, it sounds like you are standing at the edge of the shore at night while gazing at a far off tranquil storm. Also Imogen Heap is a fantastic artist, so any of her music is highly recommended! If any of you guys have seen the movie The Holiday, two of her songs “Let Go” and “Just For Now” are in the soundtrack.

3. If You Wanna Love Somebody - Tom Odell

Tom Odell is such an amazing and soulful artist that I’ve started listening to in the past couple of years, and this song is one of my favorites of his. It’s a very mellow and romantic song with a steady powerful beat. As a bonus, his voice could break your heart. Once you’ve listened to this one, my next recommendation would definitely be “Here I Am,” but “If You Wanna Love Somebody” is how I got introduced to him, and I think it’s a great starting point. Love, love, love this man’s voice, and I hope you will too!

Well that’s about it for today, I hope you guys find at least one song out of this list that piques your interest! College has already been such an amazing place to find new music, especially through CY Radio, so be sure to check out our shows throughout the week. Stay safe, stay tuned, and have a great week!
